How Long Does an Engine Swap Take? The Complete Timeline Breakdown

How Long Does It Take to Swap an Engine?

An engine swap is one of the most powerful upgrades you can give your vehicle, but how long does it take? The answer depends on the complexity of the swap, fabrication work, wiring, tuning, and parts availability. Some swaps can take just a few weeks, while others—like custom Hellcat or LS swaps—can take several months to complete.

⏳ Average Engine Swap Timelines

  • Basic Engine Swap (Stock Replacement or Same-Platform Swap): 2 - 6 weeks

  • Performance Engine Swap (LS, Coyote, or HEMI Swap with Some Mods): 3 - 6 months

  • Custom Fabricated Engine Swap (Hellcat, Twin-Turbo, or Race-Ready Build): 6+ months

⚙️ What Affects Engine Swap Time?

  • Engine Compatibility: Some swaps, like LS-to-GM or Coyote-to-Mustang, are easier. Others, like a Hellcat swap into a Jeep or classic muscle car, require more modifications.

  • Custom Fabrication Needs: If mounts, driveshafts, or crossmembers need to be custom-built, expect longer turnaround times.

  • Wiring & Electronics: Modern engines need custom wiring harnesses, ECU reprogramming, and tuning.

  • Parts Availability: Special-order parts, custom machining, or aftermarket performance upgrades can delay the process.

  • Drivetrain Upgrades: If you're swapping in a more powerful engine, you may also need a stronger transmission, differential, fuel system, and axles.

  • Tuning & Testing: A proper engine swap isn’t complete until it’s tuned and tested on the dyno or street.

🚀 Real-World Swap Examples & Time Estimates

  • Basic LS Swap (Stock LS Engine, Minimal Mods): 2 - 3 months

  • Performance LS Swap (Aftermarket Cams, Headers, Tune): 3 - 6 months

What Is an Engine Swap? Everything You Need to Know

What Is an Engine Swap?

An engine swap is the process of replacing your vehicle's original engine with a different one—either for more power, reliability, or modern technology. Whether you're upgrading an old classic or pushing your performance to new heights, an engine swap can transform your ride.

Why Consider an Engine Swap?

An engine swap isn't just for show—there are many reasons car enthusiasts choose to swap engines, including:

  • More Horsepower & Torque – Upgrade to a bigger, more powerful engine.

  • Better Reliability – Get rid of outdated, unreliable engines with a modern, efficient one.

  • Customization & Performance Gains – Build a vehicle that matches your exact performance goals.

  • Modern Technology & Fuel Efficiency – Swap in a newer engine with better fuel economy and advanced features.

  • Aftermarket Support – Engine platforms like LS, Coyote, and Hellcat swaps come with a wide range of performance parts.

Types of Engine Swaps

There are different kinds of engine swaps, depending on what you're looking to achieve.

  • Same Engine Replacement – Installing a newer version of your existing engine for reliability.

  • Performance Swap – Upgrading to a high-performance engine like a Hellcat, LS, or Coyote V8.

  • Custom Fabrication Swap – When no direct fit engine exists, requiring modifications to engine mounts, wiring, and tuning.

If you’re considering a swap, it’s important to choose the right shop that specializes in custom fabrication, wiring, and tuning.

How Much Does an Engine Swap Cost?

Costs vary depending on the engine choice, modifications, and labor. Here’s a breakdown:

Each swap requires custom wiring, mounts, drivetrain modifications, and tuning. The more custom work involved, the higher the cost.

How Long Does an Engine Swap Take?

Most swaps take 3-6 months, depending on:

  • Complexity of the build

  • Custom fabrication needed

  • Tuning & wiring challenges

At Hellcat Swap Shop, we specialize in first-ever builds, custom fabrication, and high-performance engine swaps that push the limits of what’s possible.

Why Consider an Engine Swap? Top Reasons to Upgrade Your Ride

Why Would You Swap Your Engine?

An engine swap isn’t just about replacing an old motor—it’s about unlocking more power, reliability, and performance in your vehicle. Whether you want to build a track beast, a daily driver with more horsepower, or a weekend warrior, swapping your engine can take your ride to the next level.

🔥 Top Reasons to Swap Your Engine

  • More Horsepower & Torque – A modern engine swap can double or triple your horsepower. Swapping a stock 200 HP engine for a 6.2L Hellcat engine with 700+ HPor a turbocharged LS3 pushing over 1,000 HP means serious gains.

  • Better Reliability & Efficiency – Older engines wear down over time, leading to breakdowns, oil leaks, and expensive repairs. A modern LS, Coyote, or Hellcat swap gives you an engine designed with better materials, better efficiency, and longer life.

  • Customization & Performance Gains – With an engine swap, you control every aspect of the build. Whether it’s a built stroker motor, supercharged setup, or twin-turbo monster, a swap allows you to create your dream car.

  • Modern Technology & Fuel Efficiency – Many classic cars and trucks have outdated carbureted engines. Swapping in a modern fuel-injected LS or Coyote engine means better gas mileage, smoother performance, and updated technology like electronic throttle control and variable valve timing.

  • Availability of Aftermarket Support – Platforms like LS, Coyote, and Hellcat swaps come with huge aftermarket support. This means you have access to performance parts, tuning options, and swap kits to make the process smoother.

⚙️ Most Popular Engine Swap Choices

Need Hellaciously Fast Power? Nothing beats Hellcat Swaps

Need Hellaciously Fast Power? Nothing beats Hellcat Swaps

the Hellcat engine is available as a crate engine so anyone with the money can buy a brand new 6.2-liter Supercharged V8 engine and put it in anything they please…….That's a huge engine and a lot of transmission to fit into a car that wasn't designed with a supercharged V8 in mind. That means it takes a creative mind, a lot of technical skill, and, in some cases, a complete lack of fear to drive the resulting car.

With 20+ year experience, John Talor of Mastertech at is considered the expert at custom engine swaps. Customers transport their vehicles from all over the U.S. to his shop in Port Lavaca, TX to have John’s expertise and knowledge.

Brake Repair

Can you remember the last time you had your brakes serviced? If not, that's probably a sign that it's time to have them looked at. It's a good idea to have your brakes examined every year to ensure they are in good shape. After all, don't you want to be confident that when you need your vehicle to come to a complete stop, it will?

Needless to say, your brakes are one of the most crucial safety features on your vehicle and get utilized every time you drive.

There are two types of braking systems on most automobiles; standard brakes & ABS. A typical braking system is made up of the rotor, the caliper, and brake pads or shoes.

What You Need to Know About Your Brakes

In order for your brakes to properly stop your vehicle, they should be in proper operating order and not worn down at the rotors. Considering that this is a system that you use daily, make sure not to ignore any sort of issues. Any small changes can signify that your brakes require repair. For best performance and safety, have them examined on a regular basis.

If you observe any of the following, have your mechanic check your brakes right away:

  •  A high-pitched squeak when you press the brakes

  • A scratching or grinding noise when not braking

  • Shaking or vibrating when stopping your vehicle

  • More pressure required to bring the vehicle to a complete stop

  • Remember to have your brakes inspected annually, and even more often if you drive regularly in urban area traffic or if you live in a hilly region.

To maintain your brakes:

  •  Never drive with the parking brake on

  •  Have your brake fluid examined and replaced as needed

  •  Pay attention to how often you need to add fluid. If it's more than every couple of months, you may have a hole

The quicker you examine issues and change brake pads, the safer your car will be. Prolonging brake issues could lead to another more costly car repair down the road.

BMW Tips to Long Life

Have you ever heard that BMW stands for “Bring Money With You”? That might be a clue to the answer to the question, “Are BMWs expensive to maintain?” The true answer depends on who you ask and how well you care for your vehicle.

BMW produced 2.168 million cars last year. So while some may question BMW maintenance cost, they remain one of the world’s most popular cars.

How much is maintenance on a BMW? Are BMW parts expensive? How can I get BMW free maintenance? These are questions you may have when owning or considering buying a BMW.

As with any car, it’s important to keep your BMW running and looking like new. Keep reading to learn some BMW maintenance tips and information to keep your costs low.

BMW Maintenance Tips

BMWs are one of the best-built cars on the road. It’s a luxury brand that deserves to be treated with care.

Let’s look at all the ways you can keep your BMW looking and running like the ultimate driving machine.

Simple Things You Can Do Yourself

In your everyday dealings with your car, there are things you can do to extend its life.

1. Park in the Shade

Sun can damage the interior and exterior of your car. Try to park it in a garage or in the shade while you are out.

2. Wash and Wax

Clean your car inside and out regularly. Dirt can do damage to your vehicle. Wax it too to keep it looking new and prevent rust.

3. Use a Reputable Gas Station

Putting clean gas in your BMW will keep it running better longer. Check to see if the gas is filtered at the pump for cleaner gas.

BMW Service

Regular maintenance by a qualified mechanic will help you avoid expensive repairs and emergencies later.

1. Get Regular Oil Changes

Changing the oil in your BMW is vital to it running well. Oil changes every 12-15,000 miles is the recommendation, but other factors such as living in a hot climate may require your car to get more frequent oil changes.

2. Check Tires, Brakes, and Engine

While having the oil changed, tires, brakes and the engine should be checked for any problems. Tires are something that you should also keep an eye on yourself. Check the tire pressure and watch for wear and tear.

Listen for squeaking or grinding brakes and any abnormal engine noises in between checkups.

3. Transmission Flush

Flushing the transmission every 50,000 miles is recommended. Servicing the transmission fluid and filter will keep you from having to replace your transmission in the future.

At MasterTech Auto Repair in Cleveland, TN, we are BMW Repair Specialists.
